Covenant Series 1 – The Abrahamic Covenant

This is the first part of a three-part series on the Covenants that God has made with the House of Israel. The three Covenants are as follows:

Part 1: The Abrahamic Covenant – A Land fit for a People.
Part 2: The Davidic Covenant – A King fit for a Land.
Part 3: The New Covenant – A People fit for a King.

In this first part, we consider the development of the Covenant that the Lord has made with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. This is succinctly expressed in Psalm 105.

He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham; the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: “To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit.” Psalm 105:8-11

The borders of Canaan are delineated in two chapters in the Bible, namely, Numbers 34 and Ezekiel 47. It is noteworthy that the second passage is looking into the Millennium. There has to be a day when the borders of the current land of Israel are extended to include all of Lebanon and some of modern Syria, north of Damascus. To achieve this, war is inevitable.

It will be no surprise to recognize that the next major war will be between Israel and Hamas/Hezbollah. This could occur at any time. It is likely to be the war that is referred to in Ezekiel 38, namely, After many days you [Gog] will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. Ezekiel 38:7-8

It will take some recovering from, but this leads to the establishment of the scenario that must take place before yet another war, the war of Gog/Magog can occur. During these conflicts, God will enlarge the land of Israel (Isaiah 9:3) and extend its borders (Isaiah 26:15). God will pour out his Spirit of Grace (Zechariah 12:10) and all Israel will be saved (Romans 11:26). They will all know him, from the least to the greatest (Jeremiah 31:34).
